Salviato win the 24th edition. TAG Heuer Barozzi Trophy goes to Canè
Ezio and Francesca Salviato, father and daughter from Varese, write their names in the prestigious roll of honour of the Winter Marathon, taking their revenge against the bad luck of the previous edition, when a few hours before the start, they had to give up taking part in the race because of a mechanical failure of their Lancia Aprilia built in 1939, the same car that took them to win over the other 158 crews. Second and third place for the official drivers of the Alfa Romeo Historical Museum: Alessandro Gamberini (Alfa Romeo Giulietta TI, 1962) who crossed the line in front of Fabio Salvinelli (Alfa Romeo Giulia TI Super, 1964). Seventh and eighth, Cavagna-Bossini (Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider, 1960) and Cibaldi-Costa (Porsche 356 SC Coupé, 1963), first crews completely from Brescia, third in this particular ranking, Lorenzo and Mario Turelli (son and father), who led their 1954 Austin Healey 100 BN1 to the 14th place in the general classification.
Race tweet. We got to the heart of the race at 14.00 hrs on Friday when the 1932 Fiat 508 S Balilla Sport of Spagnoli-Parisi, with the number 1, left Madonna di Campiglio under a few snowflakes to face more than 400 km, 40 time trials, 5 time controls and 1 passage control; 11 the not scrutineered crews, including the winner of the Mille Miglia 2011 Giordano Mozzi, who didn’t take part in the race due to a disease: for his wife Stefania and him the challenge with the “night of nails” will be in 2013.
After the first 9 time trials between Carciato and Caldes, Canè-Rossi jumped to the lead with 30 penalties (after cancelling the worst time trial until then and calculating the coefficient), in front of Bresciani-Perletti (Alfa Romeo Giulia 1300 TI, 1967) with 40, Arzoni-Gregori (Fiat 850 Spider, 1968) with 45 and Salvinelli-Gastaldi with 54. Equal fifth Aliverti-Maffi (59) in their 1968 Morris Mini Cooper S and Rampello-Migliorati (MG A, 1955). In the seventh position two crews: Gamberini-Fanti and Cavagna-Bossini, with 66, in front of the Salviato family, in ninth position with 71 followed by another crew from Varese: Crugnola-Vida (Triumph TR3A, 1958) with 76.
After the three demanding time trials on the Palade Pass and the four ones in the modern safety driving centre “Safety Park” in Vadena (Canè scored only 8 penalties in the 4 PC on the track!), the race animated and at the 16th time trial Canè consolidated his position with 72 penalties, followed by Salvinelli (102) while Bresciani-Perletti from Bergamo were third (112), Riboldi-Guerini in the 1936 Fiat Morettini 508 S fourth (117) in front of the top driver Rampello (129). Sixth place for Aliverti and Arzoni from Cremona with 133 followed by Salviato with 2 penalties more. Gamberini lost positions and he was ninth with 149 together with Mario Sandrolini Cortesi, very good at taking his beautiful 1937 Citroen 11 AL Roadster inside the top ten.
After Bolzano, the crews went to the Lavazè Pass where the cold (-9.5°C) and a bit of snow fallen in the early afternoon made the road slippery. After the time trials of Tesero, Ziano di Fiemme and the break in Canazei, the provisional classification at the trial 26 (with the cancellation of the PC no. 17 and 18), confirmed the first place of Canè (127) with the tough but very far away, Salvinelli still in the second place (185) and Salviato on the podium with 192, in front of the other driver of the Alfa Romeo Historical Museum with 201 penalties like Riboldi. Rampello slipped to the sixth place with 212, Aliverti was seventh with 237, Cavagna eighth with 3 penalties more, in front of Scotto-Corradi Rolla from Genova (252) in the 1939 Lancia Aprilia, authors of a good recovery with Lui-Vicchi from Mantova (Fiat 1100/103, 1953) who were in the tenth position with a total of 257.
The snow completely changed the landscape, and the road conditions put a strain on the crews who were called to deal with ten time trials, climbing in quick succession the Passes Pordoi, Campolongo, Gardena, Sella and Costalunga. After the time trial number 36, Canè was confirmed leader (287) with Salviato at 324 who overtook Salvinellli (only fourth with 354), while Riboldi-Guerini were excellent third with 333 penalties. From the fifth to the seventh place there were Rampello (369), Gamberini (377) and Cavagna (386) controlling each other, followed by Crugnola (404), Lui (405) and Aliverti (412), while Armando Fontana with Giovanni Adorni (Porsche 911 T, 1968) appeared in the eleventh place. At the time control of Carezza Giuliano Canè, favourite to win, seen the partial rankings, made a mistake passing with two minutes delay, imitated by Spagnoli and by Rampello, who paid one.
There were the last four time trials to face when Alberto Riboldi was forced to retire crashed by a car (not in the race), while the heavy rain at the beginning of the climb towards the Mendel Pass turned into snow. The classification took its final shape: Salviato put his hands on the victory with 360 penalty, Gamberini finished in the second place with 400 ahead of Salvinelli, third with 428. Fontana ended surprisingly fourth at 450, Crugnola took the fifth place (453), Mauro Clerici and Deborah Restelli (Porsche 356 SC Cabriolet, 1965) sixth, recovering six places in the last four time trials. Cavagna- Bossini confirmed the seventh place (458) in front of Michele Cibaldi (473); Aliverti (477) and Lui (483) exchanged the ninth and tenth place: Rampello-Migliorati, penalized by the mistake at the time control, fell down to the eighteenth place, just before Canè that closed twentieth. The heavy snowfall started on the Mendel Pass lasted until the Time Control in Folgarida and the final Passage Control of Madonna di Campiglio, where the cars found over 15 centimetres of snow.
The former Formula 1 driver Ivan Capelli, today "voice" of the world championship on Rai, the Italian television, thanked Volvo "who gave me the opportunity to take part in this great race in a PV544 built in 1965. I must admit that it was more difficult than I expected. In addition to the difficulty of driving on the snow and ice, these races require a great attention both by the driver and the navigator. Gianni Lenzi and I have driven for twelve consecutive hours without a lapse of concentration in order to avoid going the wrong way and accumulating too many penalties during the time trials", for them an excellent 50th place, while the Senator Filippo Berselli (Porsche 356 SC Coupé, 1963) got the 86th final position. Robert 'Bob' Paltrow, uncle of Gwyneth, the Hollywood actress, raced in a 1955 Austin Healey 100 BN1 together with Angelo Pontiroli and finished with satisfaction at the 105th place his first experience at the Winter Marathon.
The Ermini 1100 Sport built in 1952 driven by Emanuel Piona and Geronimo La Russa ended at the 94th place, while a delay at a time control cost Giuseppe Lunardi (Austin Healey 100 BN1, 1953) the exclusion from the final classification. In the Ladies’ cup, the success went to Laura Bonzi and Federica Bignetti Bignetti who, in the rare Abarth 1000 Bialbero, gained the 80th place.
The special classification reserved to the foreign crews was won by the Canadian Brian Harper and Matthew Bubbers (Porsche 356 C Cabriolet, 1964), while in the challenge among the CSAI racing teams (the greatly desired model designed by Co.Fe.Mo.) the victory went to F.M. from Brescia (present with 20 crews) in front of the ClassicTeam from Mantova and of the other "cousins" from Brescia, the Emmebi 70.
"I have to congratulate all the participants," said the president of the organizing committee Roberto Vesco "because despite the evident difficult weather conditions, they did not give up and continued with great determination. The road system of the province of Bolzano had informed about little problems, but probably the wind and cold have worsen the situation." 38 of the 40 foreseen time trials were carried out regularly, only a technical problem of a time instrument forced the clerk of the event to cancel two trials. Andrea Vesco added "We must thank all Race Marshalls (by Pinè Motori) and the timekeepers of Brixia Crono, despite the severe weather conditions, they have done their job extremely well." Always very useful the service offered by OBU (On Board Units) N-eXT placed in all cars in the race, both in the competitors’ and in the organizers’ cars: the clerk of the event Vittorio Galvani received about twenty calls concerning only mechanical problems.
The trophies on the frozen lake. On Saturday afternoon, the event continued live broadcasted by Teletutto (also in streaming) with the MotorStorica Trophy, and the TAG Heuer Barozzi Trophy. The first reserved to the pre-war sports cars, was won again (after the success of 2011) by the crew Sandrolini-Venturi in a 1937 Citroen 11 AL Roadster (time 48".09) in front of Spagnoli-Parisi (Fiat 508 S Balilla Sport, 1932) and another Citroen 7C Cabriolet drived by Bonfante-Morellato. The TAG Heuer Barozzi Trophy, reserved to the first 32 classified crews of the Winter Marathon, was won for the second consecutive year by Giuliano Canè with his Lancia Aprilia (this year with Gianmarco Rossi as navigator). Second place for the Porsche 356 C Coupé of Guido Barcella and Ombretta Ghidotti and third the Innocenti Mini Cooper of Andrea Belometti and Federico Passi. Out of the podium the Salviato family. The first 3 classified crews were given a TAG Heuer Carrera Formula 1 watch and a Gucci key holder, offered by the jewelers in Brescia Ennio and Orietta Barozzi.
The prize-giving. In the evening the prize-giving ceremony at PalaCampiglio: to do the honors Councillor Tullio Serafini, responsible for Tourism in Ragoli and the deputy-major of Pinzolo, Walter Vidi. Marco Masè, President of APT (Tourist Office) of Madonna di Campiglio-Pinzolo-Val Rendena, offered a week's holiday to the winners and a weekend to the first three teams from Brescia (Cavagna-Bossini, Cibaldi-Costa and Turelli-Turelli). Prizes also for the Porsche Italia Classic Team, the Alfa Romeo Historical Museum and the Volvo Racing Team which were given Borrani Wheels as prize for taking part in the race in an official way. Valli-Castelli, 33rd in the general ranking and therefore the first excluded from the afternoon challenge on the frozen lake, cheered themselves up with a Realtimes 2 with a pressostat of Blizz Timing and Canè, winner of the Power Stage ERGO (the exciting time trial number 1) won the multifunction chronometer Blizz C-200.
After thanking all Authorities, Sponsors, the Police, the CSAI Officers and all the staff members, the evening ended with a gala dinner with the draw of a mechanical stopwatch TAG Heuer, a three-liter bottle of Amarone of Valpolicella Fumanelli, the reproduction of a collectible gun by Davide Pedersoli and a mountain bike Yakari.
In cooperation with the Casino of Campione, three tables were set up to entertain for free those present that with a little luck could win prizes offered by the casino at the border with Switzerland.
The goodbye is for the 2013 edition, which will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Winter Marathon, while Vecars is already working for the next event: the Franciacorta Historic on 6-7 April.
Great success for the presentation of the Winter Marathon
It was a very particular date (11/11/11) the one that saw the Centro Porsche in Desenzano host the official presentation of the 24th Winter Marathon. The event led by Andrea Cittadini, journalist of Brescia’s TV-network Teletutto, saw the presence of over 150 people at the modern centre of the Saottini Group.
Among the guests, also one of the most famous and known journalist of the Italian sports television, Ezio Zermiani, who during his speech underlined the great charm of the race which, because of its difficulties, becomes almost epic, unique and different from 1000 Miglia, that he had the opportunity to follow for many years. “The Winter Marathon gives everybody a rush of adrenaline like running the 100 metres race, while 1000 Miglia is as hard as a marathon. The starry landscape in the heart of the night” he added “remains forever in the heart of competitors and the people often choose a sports car in order to live this adventure to the full and say: I was there too!”. Thanks to his deep knowledge of the territory, the journalist from Bolzano is a real expert in the regularity races for historic cars, as President of the renewed “Scuderia Dolomiti”.
Beatrice Saottini remarked that in these difficult economic times, the Saottini Group proceeds “with strong will in the philosophy of the work and with determination in a continuous innovation”. The presence at the Winter Marathon both as a sponsor and as a participant with the crew Capolupo-Saottini (on a 1968 Porsche 911 S from their own collection) is “the confirmation that in addition to the charm of the snow, of the mountain roads, of the stars there is the awareness that Porsche is the most represented car factory at the start” and therefore “the moment of amusement becomes a way to be close to the Porsche cars’ owners and to meet many people with the shared passion for cars”.
For the ATP Tourist Office of Madonna di Campiglio, its President Marco Masè remarked as the Winter Marathon “has been one of the most important sports events for many years, entering in fact into the DNA of our ski resort”. This year the competitors, in addition to the charm of the race and to its great emotions, will find a great novelty: the “Skiarea Campiglio Val Rendena Val di Sole” with 150 kilometres of ski slopes that give life now to the widest district of all Trentino.
The National CSAI Marshall Carmen Righi brought the regards from the President and the Director of the ACI (Automobile Club) of Trento and from the CSAI Delegate for the autonomous province of Trento Maurizio Emer, a member of the CSAI National Council, absent due to a previous work commitment. In her speech Ms. Righi remembered “her presence as President of the board of Stewards of the Winter Marathon 2011” praising “the excellent organisation of Vecars and the good sportsmanship and fairness of the competitors, as there have not been great problems to be solved”. Wishing all participants good fun, she said to be happy that “the snowy landscapes are always fascinating and that every year a lot of competitors arrive in Trentino Alto Adige for the opening of the motorsports season”.
Roberto Vesco, of Vecars, explained the technical characteristics of the event that this year will present a route renewed for the 40%, an increase of the time trials that become 40 and the cross of 11 passes with over 400 kilometres track to face. “We hope that there will be some snowfalls before the race” Vesco said “to make the route more spectacular and have it all white with snow, but in general the important is that everything goes well without having to deal with alternative routes because some passes are closed due to avalanches danger”. On Saturday the appointment will always be on the frozen lake in Madonna di Campiglio “for the successful MotorStorica and TAG Heuer Barozzi throphies, that fill with spectators the track where the historic cars defy each other at the last hundredth”.
Among the public there was also Erica Furini, directress of Safety Park, that this year will see the passage of the competitors at the time control no. 2 and in 4 new precision time trials. “It is a pleasure for us to see so many historic cars along the safe driving track but also an honor that a particular event such as the Winter Marathon chooses our structure. The Safety Park has existed only since 2008 and among its targets there is the one to be known outside the province of Bolzano”.
Assisted by Roberto Vesco, the journalist Ezio Zermiani continued the presentation of the event that this year want to take the opportunity to find a media feedback on the web channel: “A lot of young people” Zermiani said “are becoming fond of the historic cars, there is a great interest and we will try to give space and voice to such a beautiful race that every year offers great emotions: fun is guaranteed. We have an ambitious project in mind in order to make this fun go on all year round: the organization of a challenge made of three events, three prestigious appointments, which will end in a Trophy” “That” Masè said nicely “you could call ‘3-Tre’ like the legendary downhill slope in Madonna di Campiglio”.
Andrea Cittadini interviewed then Giuliano Canè, past edition’s winner both of Winter Marathon and TAG Heuer Barozzi Trophy: “2011 edition was really wonderful for me and …” joking “I hope to achieve the same result this year!”. The champion from Bologna doesn’t know yet in which car he will be at the start but “I hope in a sports car that will allow me to appreciate more the route. As for the time trials I know Vesco family’s ability and I know that they will be challenging and technical as usual”. Next to Canè, the winner of the last 1000 Miglia, Giordano Mozzi from Mantua, who has never taken part in the event due to work engagements in the period of the Winter Marathon. “This year” he declared “I am trying to organize my work in order to be at the start, I don’t know the race but I am sure it is nice and difficult and the time trials are not banal and obvious, the context is appealing and I think that tiredness will influence the result. I would really like very much to be able to be on the frozen lake among the 32 competitors of the knockout challenge: I followed it in streaming last year and I found it particularly involving; it is exciting to think that you win a round and have another chance with a new opponent.”
The presentation went on with the award ceremony of the Main and Top Sponsors, who financially support the event with the presentation by Roberto Vesco of a desk set by Ottaviani with a customized barometer as a mark of the partnership with the Winter Marathon.
The evening ended pleasantly in the halls of the Saottini Centre with a refined cocktail party served by chef Carlo Bresciani of “Antica Cascina San Zago” and his staff to all participants.
Entries are open for the 2012 Winter Marathon
From 19 to 22 January 2012 Madonna di Campiglio and the Brenta Dolomites will be also this year the setting of the Winter Marathon, the fifth organized by Vecars from Brescia. Entries to the 24th edition, restricted to a maximum of 200 cars with front-wheel and rear-wheel drive, were officially opened on Thursday 1 September.
The website www.wintermarathon.it gives everybody all the information needed to take part in the race, and, if all requirements are met, by simply clicking on the button 'Entry', you can easily register: the online form has to be filled in with the required data, to be printed and sent to the Organizing Committee together with the chosen entry fee (hospitality from Thursday 19 or from Friday 20 January), which has remained unchanged.
The calculation of the coefficients applied to the scored penalties is confirmed (in order to favor the oldest cars which are the most difficult to be driven in a long and demanding event like this), as it is also confirmed the central Savoia Palace Hotel as the Race Headquarters and the ideal location for the administrative checks and scrutineering of crews, divided into two sessions also this year. The first is scheduled on Thursday 19 January from 15.00 to 19.00 hrs, while the second on Friday 20 January from 7.30 to 12.00 hrs.
At 14.00 hrs on Friday 20 January, the race will start for the first time from Piazzale Brenta and the cars will begin to face the route with some important parts which remain unchanged during the years (such as the 4 time trials in the modern safety driving centre Safety Park in Vadena - Bolzano) and with a route renewed for the 40% that will engage the competitors in more than 400 kilometers with the crossing of 11 passes, among them the Pordoi Pass stands out with its altitude of 2.239 meters.
In Canazei there will be the only scheduled stop in the race: at 19.30 hrs the first car will reach the Park Hotel Il Caminetto where in the "Gran Tobià Taverna & Teater" the dinner will be served with many delicious tastes of the traditional cuisine of Trentino. The stop will allow all crews to recover the energies for the second and more challenging part of the race, which will restart with the climb in close succession of the following Passes: Pordoi, Gardena and Sella: 50 km, of winding and hard road mostly at an altitude of over 2.100.
Awaiting to pass the final time control in Folgarida, coming from Mendola Pass, competitors can console themselves with a hot drink offered by the characteristic Hotel Caminetto. The arrival of the cars in Piazza Righi in Madonna di Campiglio is scheduled starting from 1.50 in the night, and the public will have the possibility to admire closely the cars exhausted by the night efforts after 5 time controls and 40 time trials (five more than last year) that will determine the final standings, with the automatic cancellation of the worst time trial for each crew.
The show will restart on Saturday afternoon at 13.45 hrs on the frozen lake in Madonna di Campiglio, with the usual appointment with the "MotorStorica Trophy" (reserved to pre-war sports cars competing in the Winter Marathon) and the “TAG Heuer Barozzi Trophy” (where the first 32 classified crews of the night race will compete in an exciting knockout challenge). At 19.30 hrs, authorities, sponsors and competitors will meet at the modern Congress Centre “PalaCampiglio” where they will take part in the price-giving ceremony and the gala dinner with the farewell toast to the 2013 edition.
Agreements have been recently finalized with many major companies, that have decided to support the third regularity race for historic cars in Italy by number of participants (after Mille Miglia and Premio Nuvolari), thus contributing to increase its success.
The first official appointment will be the "28th Auto and Moto d'Epoca" in Padua: during the most important international exhibition of vintage cars and motorcycles, that will take place from 27 to 30 October, Roberto and Andrea Vesco will be pleased to welcome all those who want to learn more about the race. Just at the stand in Padua in Hall 15 (also in the preview on Thursday 27 October with exclusive entrance by invitation) the official poster and brochure will be available with all necessary information for those who wish to attend the event.
To keep constantly updated on the latest news of the race you can also consult the official website www.wintermarathon.it.
Winter Marathon is back from 19 to 22 January 2012
On Thursday 1 September entries will be officially open to the 24th Winter Marathon, that will take place in Madonna di Campiglio from Thursday 19 to Sunday 22 January 2012. The international classic regularity event for historic cars, organized by Vecars of Roberto and Andrea Vesco from Brescia, comes up again with interesting novelties and appreciated confirmations after the success of public and of participating cars (200) reached in the last edition.
Also this year both front and rear wheel drive cars built within 1968 will be admitted to the race, owing at least one valid sports document (HRCP FIA or FIVA). The calculation of the coefficients applied to the scored penalties is also confirmed (in order to favor the oldest cars which are therefore the most difficult to be driven in such long and challenging events). The central Savoia Palace Hotel will host the headquarters of the Race Direction again and is confirmed as the ideal location for administrative checks and scrutineering of the crews, traditionally held on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning.
The competitors will face a route that has been changed for the most part. With its more than 400 kilometers, it will engage the competing crews in the crossing of about a dozen of the most attractive alpine passes and in an increased number of time trials (about 40); in order to make things easier, considering the particularity and the difficulty of such a demanding event, the worst time trial will be automatically cancelled before the exposure of the final classification. Finally, the cars will start and arrive as usual in the centre of Madonna di Campiglio.
The show will then continue on Saturday afternoon on the frozen lake in Madonna di Campiglio, where the two traditional trophies will be presented again, respectively reserved to the pre-war sports cars entering the race and to the first 32 classified crews of the night race, that will defy each other in an exciting knockout challenge starting from 14.00 hrs. In the evening the characteristic dinner with authorities, sponsors and competitors will close the 24th edition with the well-wishing farewell toast to the 2013 race.
Through our website www.wintermarathon.it, all enthusiasts can already find the necessary information to participate and, if the necessary requirements are met, from Thursday 1 September 2011, they can join in the race: the online form has to be filled in with the required data, printed and sent to the Organizers accompanied by the chosen entry fee (with hospitality from Thursday or from Friday), which remains unchanged compared to 2011.
The first official appointment will be as usual the "28th Auto and Moto d'Epoca" in Padova: at the most important international exhibition of the sector which will take place from 27 to 30 October, Roberto an Andrea Vesco will be pleased to welcome anyone wishing to have more information about the event. Just at the stand in Hall 15 (this year also in the preview of Thursday 27 October) the official poster and brochures will be available together with the necessary information for those wishing to take part in the event.
