Winter Marathon 2009 – 21st edition

404 kilometres, 35 timed trials, 9 Dolomite passes in over 11 consecutive hours of driving

It was Giuliano Cané, together with his wife Lucia Galliani – following his successful solo experience the previous year – who won the twenty-first edition of the Winter Marathon. Driving the same 1938 Lancia Aprilia, the strong Bologna-based crew overcame Gianni Lenzi and Giuseppe Cadoppi in a 1961 Volvo 122 S Amazon and the young brothers Antonino and Gaspare Margiotta in a 1954 Fiat 1100/103. Fourth overall and the first Brescia-based crew were Fabio Salari and Roberto Bonetti in a 1962 MG B, after a determined race despite problems with the head gasket, which forced them to continually top up the water to prevent the engine of the small British spider from overheating.

In the first edition of the MotorStorica Trophy, reserved for pre-war cars entered in the event, the imposing 1926 Bentley 4.5 Speed Model driven by brothers Maurizio and Mario Piantelli came out on top, while in the TAG Heuer Barozzi Trophy victory went to Mimmo Raimondi together with Giovanni Moceri in a 1959 Porsche 356 A Cabriolet (the two swapped driving duties after Moceri had taken part in the night race, finishing in eighth position). The LP Classic team crew, who had eliminated teammate Canè in the quarter-finals, defeated Fabbri-Cassani (43”03) in the final, driving a Volvo PV 444 from the team of the same name, while the third step of the podium was claimed by Lenzi-Cadoppi, again in a car from the Swedish manufacturer.
