Winter Marathon 2022 – 34th edition
One of the longest and most exciting editions ever, with over 500 km of racing, 16 hours of driving, 15 Dolomite passes, 65 timed trials and 6 average speed trials
The young crew of Edoardo Bellini and Roberto Tiberti, aboard a 1937 Fiat 508 C, repeated their 2021 success, adding their names to the event’s roll of honour for the second time.
Confirming the complexity of the race, always unique and never easy to interpret, two other crews who had already won in the past also reached the podium: Guido Barcella and Ombretta Ghidotti, second in a 1938 Fiat 508 C of Scuderia 3T, and Alberto Aliverti and Stefano Valente, third, also aboard a 1937 Fiat 508 C.
The race, characterised by extreme cold with temperatures dropping as low as -15°C on the descent from the Pordoi Pass, was fiercely contested from the very first stages of Thursday’s opening leg, with only minimal gaps between the leading competitors throughout Friday’s second leg as well. The decisive move came from the winners in the final series of trials after the dinner stop at Chalet Gerard, at the foot of the Gardena Pass.
The organisers expressed their satisfaction at having ensured, with the help of the service personnel deployed along the entire race route, full compliance with the regulations set out in the ACI Sport Protocol for containing the spread of Covid-19.
First among the all-foreign crews were the British pairing Massimiliano and Edoardo Ottochian in a 1964 Austin Mini Cooper S Mk I, taking part in the competition for the first time, followed by the Belgian crew Ger and Janet Bas (Lancia Fulvia Coupé 1600 HF, 1970) and the Swiss pairing Roberto Felici and Edoardo Tasciotti in a 1969 Porsche 911 2.2 T.
Former World Rally Champion Miki Biasion (Eberhard brand ambassador) finished 92nd in a 1974 Lancia Stratos; SKY Sport F1 personality Davide Valsecchi finished 69th overall, aboard a 1968 Lancia Fulvia Coupé Rallye 1.3 S.
Among the teams, victory went to Franciacorta Motori , followed in order by Brescia Corse and 3T Auto e Moto d’Epoca; the top spot in the classification reserved for under-30 crews went to Barcella-Vecchi, an excellent seventh overall in a 1963 Porsche 356 C Coupé, while the first female crew was formed by sisters Benedetta and Stefania Gnutti in a 1955 Fiat 1100/103.
In the Centro Porsche Brescia Trophy, the young crew of Nicola Barcella and Michele Vecchi in a 1963 356 C Coupé (car no. 17) claimed a clear victory, defeating the 1964 356 C Coupé of Domenico Battagliola and Paolo Fredi in the final; third place went to Mauro Argenti and Roberta Amorosa in a 1969 911 T 2.2.
In the 6th edition of the Eberhard Trophy, victory instead went to Vincenzo Bertoli and Alberto Gamba in a 1938 Fiat 508 C (no. 10), who defeated the Fiat 508 C of Winter Marathon winners Bellini-Tiberti (no. 3) in the final, recording a net time of 43″.00 against their disappointing 42″.93. Completing the podium were Domenico Battagliola and Paolo Fredi in a 1964 Porsche 356 C Coupé (no. 18), protagonists of the day with two podium finishes, after defeating Roberto and Mario Crugnola in a 1937 Fiat 508 C in the final for 3rd-4th place.
